Read to Ride
Mission Marshall and the Marshall Independent School District have partnered to provide a brand new bicycle to every third grade elementary student who improves his or her grade level reading by at least one level. Read to Ride has donated more than 1000 bicyles to deserving young readers since it’s inception in the 2016/2017 school year! Reading levels are continuing to progress with your generous support.
Your donation of $75 or more helps to fund a bicycle and helmet for a deserving young reader in our community!

Marshall ISD third graders who increase their reading skills during the 2016-2017 school year will soon have a nice little prize courtesy of Mission Marshall.
During a meeting last week with MISD principals, Mission Marshall announced that it has partnered with the district to sponsor a new “Read to Ride” program which will provide brand-new bicycles to all third graders in the district who meet specified reading goals at their campus. The students’ progress will be monitored throughout the school year, and those who reach their goals will be awarded a brand-new, fully-assembled bicycle.
“One of our target areas at Mission Marshall is childhood literacy,” said Mission Marshall Director Misty Scott. “Third grade reading levels are an indicator of future academic success, so Mission Marshall has decided to offer the Read to Ride program to those students. We are thrilled to partner with MISD, support our teachers and to encourage strong reading skills in our third graders.”
Each campus in the district will set appropriate reading-level goals for their students, and students will be monitored throughout the year in terms of their reading progress toward those goals. Once they reach the goal, the student will become eligible to receive their bike.
Mission Marshall will provide the brand-new bicycle, which will be completely assembled, as well as a safety helmet for every third-grade student who meets their reading goal.
“This is a fantastic program and we are grateful to Mission Marshall for their generosity and desire to help our students achieve their goals in reading,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Jerry Gibson. “This gives are students an extra boost and gives them something tangible to work for as they work this year to improve and develop a firm foundation for their reading skills.”
Scott said the idea for the program originated from a member of the Mission Marshall Administrative Team.
“Recently, we have wanted to grow this area from preschool ages to school-age kids,” she said. “One of our board members was praying about what to do and the idea for Read to Ride came to him. When he shared the Read to Ride idea with the rest of our team at our monthly meeting it definitely resonated with everyone so we got to work to make it a reality.”
The first campus kickoff for the Read to Ride program was held at Robert E. Lee Elementary last week, with other campus events to get the program up and running scheduled throughout the next few weeks.
